RCG Corporation Limited (ASX: RCG) is an investment holding company which owns and operates a number of footwear businesses in the performance, comfort and active lifestyle sectors. These include The Athlete's Foot Australia and the newly acquired Shoe Superstore Group. In addition, RCG's wholesale and distribution subsidiary, RCG Brands Pty Limited is the Australian distributor for the Merrell, Cushe, Chaco & CAT brands of footwear and apparel.
The Athlete's Foot was established under licence in Australia in 1981. Since then it has grown to become Australia’s largest retailer of athletic footwear and now operates over 148 stores across Australia and New Zealand, with stores in every state and territory. In August 2009 RCG signed new long term licence agreements for The Athlete’s Foot business in Australia and New Zealand under which it will pay no ongoing licence fees to the US licensor for an effective term of 249 years.
Acquired by RCG in August 2009, Shoe Superstore operates a small chain of branded, comfort and lifestyle footwear stores. The business, is not mall based, but rather is a destination style business in high traffic shopping precincts. RCG intends to employ its retail competencies and resources to improve and grow the existing business, before commencing a gradual but sustained expansion programme. Targeting the emerging branded comfort footwear market and by offering range and value to destination shoppers, Shoe Superstore is a complementary business to The Athlete's Foot.
Since January 2010, RCG has held the Australian rights to distribute the Merrell brand of footwear and apparel under an agreement with Wolverine World Wide Inc, the owner of Merrell. Since launching in the Australian marketplace 10 years ago, Merrell has built a significant presence in the outdoor, comfort, active lifestyle, and performance markets. In December 2010, RCG opened it's first Australian Merrell flagship store. RCG has subsequently been awarded Australian distribution rights for Cushe and Chaco, small niche brands, and CAT (Catepillar) footwear and apparel. CAT footwear, apparel and work wear is sold in more than 150 countries worldwide and is the most recognisable industrial brand in the world. RCG has set up a wholesale division (RCG Brands), operating independently of its retail division, to maximize distribution to the many department store, specialty retail and outdoor retailers already carrying the above brands as well as to new prospective customers.
